Before kaolin can be put to good use, it has to go through several production processes. First, raw kaolin has to be extracted and processed using the wet production method which involves dissolving, segregation, filtering, de-watering and drying operations.
Clay is extracted by excavotors.
Trucks then transport this clay to the processing plant.
At the plant, this mixture of clay and water, commonly referred to as slurry, is passed through a series of filtering and de-watering tanks.
During this process, the fine sand and mica are extracted from the clay particles through suspension in water. The clay is meanwhile subjected to a number of complex chemical treatments to produce the different grades of the final product.
Treated slurry is next passed through the filter press where most of the water is removed from the clay, resulting in slabs of pressed kaolin cake.
Finally, the slabs of pressed kaolin cake are cut in smaller pieces and placed in drying sheds for natural drying, or undergo dryer for low moisture product.
